Model Reduction for Large-Scale Applications in Computational Fluid Dynamics

Prof. Karen Willcox
Department of of Aeronautics and Astronautics
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, USA

    Zeit: Mittwoch · 24. 11. 2004 · 17:00 Uhr
    Ort: Raum 9.31 · Pfaffenwaldring 9 · Campus Stuttgart-Vaihingen

Abstract

Model reduction is a powerful tool that allows the systematic generation of cost-efficient representations of large-scale systems resulting from discretization of PDEs. Reduction methodology has been developed and applied for many different disciplines, including controls, fluid dynamics, structural dynamics, and circuit design. This seminar will discuss model reduction of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) systems, although the techniques presented are applicable to general systems of PDEs. Examples will be given from a range of unsteady flow applications, including flow sensing and reconstruction, active flow control, and compressor blade aeroelasticity.

Biographical Information

Karen Willcox is Assistant Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She obtained PhD and SM degrees from MIT and a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Auckland. Following her PhD, Dr. Willcox worked at Boeing Phantom Works with the Blended-Wing-Body aircraft design team before joining the faculty at MIT. Dr. Willcox's research interests include model reduction for large-scale applications, multidisciplinary design optimization for aircraft preliminary and conceptual design, and aircraft design for environmental impact.
