Abstract

The rapid development of embedded technology enables a wide integration of devices including sensors, actuators, controllers, computers and networks into complex control systems. A most critical and important issue surrounding the design of automatic control systems with the successively increasing complexity is guaranteeing a high system performance over a wide operating range and meeting the requirements on system reliability and dependability. For this purpose, advanced fault detection and identification (FDI) methods have been applied to supporting the design of embedded devices and systems with high robustness and fault tolerance. In this talk, some current topics on the observer-based FDI system design are briefly addressed. They include

  • robustness issues in the observer-based FDI system design
  • nonlinear FDI problems
  • FDI in networked control systems (NCS)
  • embedded fault detection in feedback control loops
  • data-driven observer-based FDI design.

Biographical Information

Steven Ding received Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Gerhard-Mercator University of Duisburg, Germany, in 1992. From 1992 to 1994, he was a R&D engineer at Rheinmetall GmbH. From 1995 to 2001, he was a professor of control engineering at the University of Applied Science Lausitz in Senftenberg, Germany, and served as vice president of this university during1998 - 2000. Since 2001, he is a professor of automatic control and the chair of the Institute for Automatic Control and Complex Systems (AKS) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. His research interests are model based fault diagnosis, fault tolerant systems and their application in industry with a focus on automotive systems and process industry.
