Remote Experimentation in Control Engineering Education -- Current Developments, Possibilities and Limitation
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Schmid
Zeit: Dienstag · 4. 2. 2003 · 16:00 Uhr
Ort: Hörsaal V 9. 31 · Pfaffenwaldring 9 · Campus Stuttgart-Vaihingen
Abstract
This talk deals with virtual laboratory approaches for experimentation with simulated
and real plants, which uses the communication techniques of the World Wide Web.
The aim of this kind of distance learning environment is to facilitate the access
to these plants for students and professionals in the area of control engineering.
Resource sharing among the involved universities reduces money and time for
maintenance or development of new experiments. A short introduction into learning
and media didactics will be given. Most emphasis will be put on Web-based remote
techniques, the results from different Projects e.g. VCLab, DynaMit, RSVL,
LearNet, L2C and Cyberlab will be shown. The aspects of collaborative and
project-oriented learning and also the activity that aims at a business
model, where remotely operable laboratory experiments are made available to a
global market, will be touched.
Biographical Information
Christian Schmid received his Diplom Degree in Mechanical Engineering
in 1972 from the University of Stuttgart, and a Dr.-Ing. Degree
in Electrical Engineering from Ruhr-Universita"t Bochum in 1979.
From 1972 to 1975, he was Research Assistant at the University of Stuttgart.
From 1975 to 1992, he was assistant professor and senior lecturer in the
Control Engineering Laboratory of Ruhr-Universität Bochum. In
1992 he made the habilitation in Control Engineering. In 1993 he
was awarded the title of Privatdozent and in 2000 he was promoted
to an apl. Professor of Control Engineering in the Department of
Electrical Engineering and Information Sciences at
Ruhr-Universität Bochum. His main research interests were
numerical methods in control, model reduction, optimisation and
are currently in the field of computer-aided control system
design, adaptive control, applications using neural networks and
modelling. He has started projects in the area of multimedia-based
learning, virtual and remote labs with German and European
partners and is currently managing a nation-wide project on
networked learning in the area of control education.
