Abstract

General Classification of State Estimation Techniques is briefly reviewed. Linear Regression Kalman Filters (LRKF) for nonlinear systems are introduced. Bayesian Framework for state estimation is introduced and the need for evaluation of probability integrals is established. The concept of point mass approximation of continuous probability distribution and evaluation of associated integrals are illustrated. Concepts of iid sampling (and re-sampling) are illustrated. The generic structure of particle filters is described and illustrated. The difficulties of sample impoverishment and its remedies are introduced. Some variants of Particle Filters are mentioned in a structured framework.

Biographical Information

Smita Sadhu (Ghosh) is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India and currently a post-doctoral Commonwealth fellow at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, UK. She received the BEE degree in Electrical Engineering from Jadavpur University, India in 1991, ME and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Bengal Engineering College, India in 1994 and 1999 respectively. Her main interests in research and teaching are in the area of control systems with emphasis on estimation and filtering techniques like the Kalman filter and its variants, particle filter and its variants, base motion filtering in seekers/ target trackers, special observers including P, PI, high gain and low sensitivity (robust) observers, aircraft stabilization, aero engine control, verification and validation of control system design, robust control, application of control theory in actual systems. Smita Sadhu (Ghosh) is currently the Joint Principal Investigator of projects involving particle filter application in target tracking and navigation and of projects involving verification of control law for aero engine and flight control. Her achievements include the Tata Rao Prize from the Institution of Engineers (India) for the best paper in the Electrical Engineering division, the Sir Thomas Ward Memorial Medal, from the Institution of Engineers (India) for the best paper in the Electronics Engineering division, the Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship tenable at the University of Cambridge and Senior Research Fellowship from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research for pursuing doctoral studies. She has published about 13 research papers and co-authored about 25 research reports.
