Idle speed control of a F1 racing engine

This talk presents the design and implementation of an idle speed regulator for the Toyota Formula 1 racing car. The control variables are the throttle opening and the spark advance, while the controlled variable is the crank shaft speed. In the development of the project, a set of linear models has been initially identified from experimental data. Then, a nominal estimated model has been selected and used to synthesize an idle speed regulator with the H2 approach, and its robustness properties have been tested both in the frequency domain and in simulation. Finally, the regulator has been implemented in the Electronic Control Unit of the car and a number of tests have been performed to check its performances in steady state conditions and in the entry and exit from idle. The final regulator has been implemented on the 2003 F1 racing car.
Riccardo Scattolini was born in Milano, Italy, on 21 March 1956. He received the "Laurea" degree in Electronic Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, where he presently is Full Professor of Process Control. During the academic year 1984/85 he was with the Department of Engineering Science, Oxford University. He also spent one year working in industry on the simulation and control of chemical plants. In 1991 he was awarded the Heaviside Premium of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, United Kingdom with the paper "Constrained Receding Horizon Predictive Control" published in the IEE Proceedings. He is author of more than 60 papers published in international journals. His current research interests include predictive control as well as modeling, identification, simulation and control of industrial plants, with emphasis to automotive systems and power plants control.
