Modeling and control of an automotive electromechanical intake and exhaust valve actuator

Abstract

A promising method for enhancing automotive internal combustion engine efficiency uses solenoid actuators to directly control gas exchange valves. Mitigation of valve seating velocities is challenging due to phenomena such as magnetic saturation and pressure disturbances. Production implementation of an electromagnetic valvetrain will require the development of cost effective yet accurate sensors for robust feedback control. An overview of the modeling, control design, and experimental and simulated results using a magnetic flux based sensor will be given.

Biographical Information

Dr. Koch is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He teaches fluid mechanics, control systems and digital signal processing. His research interests include fundamental investigation of fluid mechanics, combustion and control which are applied to new internal combustion engine concepts. Combining variable valve timing with homogeneous charge compression ignition combustion is being investigated using both simulation and experiment. Research in the area of flow control of micro-droplets is also being performed. Prior to his current position, Dr. Koch worked for 8 years at DaimlerBenz/DaimlerChrysler in Stuttgart and for 2 years at General Motors in Detroit. He obtained his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Alberta in 1985 and master's degree and doctorate in mechanical engineering from Stanford University in 1986 and 1991 respectively.
