Abstract

The electronic wedge brake (EWB) is a pure brake-by-wire system based on an electronically powered brake with high self-reinforcement capability. As the EWB is a safety-relevant mechatronic system, its development has to meet the requirements of the international standard IEC 61508 (or DIN EN 61508, resp.) on 'Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems'. Based on the standard a first approach to a functional safety concept for EWB is shown, covering elements like hazard & risk analysis, safety goals, degradation strategy, functional safety requirements and concept.
