Abstract

A turbulent flow is characterized by the presence of three dimensional and non- deterministic motions that lead to increased mixing within the flow field. Close to a solid surface the increased mixing continuously brings new fluid towards the wall. Due to a non-slip condition at the solid surface, moving fluid is decelerated when it approaches such an interface. The increased momentum loss from fluid to wall in turbulent flows leads to increased energy losses when fluid is pumped through a pipe or when an object is moved through fluid. A reduction of this turbulent drag can win a professional swimmer a few milliseconds or lead to enormous economical and ecological advantages in the transport sector. Our work aims at providing further understanding of the mechanism of turbulent drag reduction and the development of flow control schemes.
