Thomas Meurer\nInstitute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mechanics\n&nbsp;Karlsruhe Institute of Technology\nKarlsruhe, Germany&nbsp;&nbsp;\n\n&nbsp; \nWednesday 2024-03-20 2 p.m.\nIST Seminar Room 2.255 - Pfaffenwaldring 9 - Campus Stuttgart-Vaihingen&nbsp; \nAbstract\nDynamic process models in process and production engineering are in general not real-time\ncapable due to the occurring nonlinearities, couplings or spatial and temporal dynamics and are\nonly conditionally suitable for control and observer design. Thus, physical model simplification,\nsystematic equation-oriented model order reduction, and data-based generation of directly reduced\norder models are of particular importance. This is especially true for the combination of these\napproaches with respect to systematic process optimization, optimal actuator and sensor placement\nor system design, and process control as well as process monitoring.\nCurrent research results on the model-based development of state estimators or soft sensors,\nrespectively, for the real-time reconstruction of system variables that are not measured or cannot\nbe measured directly and their methodical linkage with control design are presented on the basis of\nselected applications from process and production engineering. The focus is on control-oriented\ndevelopment and integration of reduced order models into design methods to address state estimation\nand control of complex high-dimensional systems. References to data-driven model-free approaches\nfor model generation and control are shown. The methodical developments are accompanied by their\nevaluation in simulation studies andby providing experimental results.&nbsp; \nBiographical Information\nThomas Meurer received the diploma degree in process systems engineering from the University of\nStuttgart, Stuttgart, Germany, in 2001, the M.Sc. degree in engineering science and mechanics from\nthe Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA, in 2000, and the Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) degree\nfrom the University of Stuttgart in 2005.\nFrom 2005 to 2007, he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow with the Chair of System Theory and\nAutomatic Control, Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany. In 2007, he joined the Automation and\nControl Institute, TU Vienna, Vienna, Austria, as a Senior Researcher, where he was appointed as an\nAssociate Professor (Privatdozent) in 2012. From 2012 to 2023, he was a Full Professor and the Head\nof the Automatic Control Group at the Kiel University, Kiel, Germany. Since 2023, he has been a\nFull Professor of Digital Process Engineering and Sustainable Materials and Energy, and the Head of\nthe Correspondent Group at the Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mechanics, Karlsruhe\nInstitute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany. His research interests include control of\ndistributed parameter systems, nonlinear control theory, observer design, and optimal control with\napplications in robotics, production processes, mechatronics, marine systems, and process systems\nengineering.\nDr. Meurer was the Chair of the IFAC TC 2.6 on Distributed Parameter Systems from 2011 to\n2017, of the TC 1.40 Systems Theory and Automatic Control of the VDI/GMA from 2017 to 2021, and the\nIEEE-CSS TC Distributed Parameter Systems from 2019 to 2022. He received the VDI/GMA Eugen Hartmann\nAward in 2009, the Cardinal Innitzer Award in 2012, the IFAC Congress Best Interactive Paper Prize\nfrom the 2017 IFAC World Congress, and the Control Engineering Practice Paper Prize Award in 2020.\nHe is an Associate Editor for the journals Automatica, Mechatronics, and Mathematical Control and\nRelated Fields.&nbsp;
