Starting with\nthe general concept of homeostasis, we will first cover selected closed loop systems at the organ\nlevel. As illustrative examples, we will look at the control loops for temperature and ventilation.\nAfterwards, we will introduce categories for closed-loop controlled therapeutic devices and\nillustrate this with selected examples. We will then move down to the cell level and take a look at\nphysiological closed-loop systems on that scale. Here we will discover negative as well as positive\nfeedback loops.\n   \n  \nBiographical Information  \nSteffen Leonhardt has studied Electrical Engineering with a major in control and design at TU\nDarmstadt and with a major in Computer Engineering at SUNY at Buffalo, NY, USA. Furthermore, he has\nstudied Medicine at Goethe University Frankfurt. Working on fault diagnosis for mechatronic\nsystems, Steffen has been a research assistant at the Institute of Automatic Control  (Head:\nProf. Isermann) and has obtained the Dr.-Ing. degree (Ph.D.) in Control Engineering in 1995. In\n2001 he obtained the Dr. med. degree (M.D.) with a thesis on automatic lung function diagnosis for\ninfants. From 1999 to 2003, he was working in the R&D department of Dräger Medical AG & Co.\nKGaA, Lübeck. As a R&D manager, he has lead two R&D projects. In 2003, he was appointed\nfull professor and head of the newly established Philips endowed Chair for Medical Information\nTechnology at RWTH Aachen University.\n    \n\n
