DESCRIPTION:Prof. Jie Chen\nDepartment of Electronic Engineering\nCity University of Hong Kong, China&nbsp; \nTuesday, 2017-10-24 16:00\n IST-Seminar-Room 2.255 - Pfaffenwaldring 9 - Campus Stuttgart-Vaihingen&nbsp; \nAbstract&nbsp; \nBode integral relations and Shannon capacity theorems are pillars of feedback and information\ntheories, and they laid the very foundation for the design of control systems and communication\nsystems, respectively. As today’s technological world is increasingly more information-rich and\nperformance-driven, there has been growing recognition that control and communication, the two\ncornerstones of modern technologies, may and should be integrated ever more closely, and that the\ndesign of new engineering systems and networks can benefit from the fusion of control and\ncommunication theories. Relating to my own experiences and viewpoints, in this talk I shall present\na control theorist’s perspective into this intriguing area of scientific inquiry. Our latest\ndevelopments in networked control will constitute the primary issues of interest, focused on the\nintrinsic limits imposed by communication channels on feedback performance. A central and unifying\ntheme throughout the talk is the fundamental limitations of control, under perfect or limited\ninformation feedback.&nbsp;&nbsp; \n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\n&nbsp;&nbsp;\nBiographical Information&nbsp; \nJie Chen is a Chair Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering, City University of\nHong Kong, Hong Kong, China. Prior to joining City University, he was with University of\nCalifornia, Riverside, California, where he was a Professor and served as Professor and Chair for\nthe Department of Electrical Engineering from 2001 to 2006. His main research interests are in the\nareas of linear multivariable systems theory, system identification, robust control, optimization,\ntime-delay systems, networked control, and multi-agent systems.\nAn elected Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of AAAS, Fellow of IFAC, Dr. Chen was a recipient of 1996 US\nNational Science Foundation CAREER Award, 2004 SICE International Award, and 2006 Natural Science\nFoundation of China Outstanding Overseas Young Scholar Award. He served on a number of journal\neditorial boards, as an Associate Editor and a Guest Editor \n. He is currently an IEEE Control Systems Society (CSS) Distinguished Lecturer and serves\nas an Associate Editor for \nSIAM Journal on Control and Optimization.&nbsp; \n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \n\n&nbsp;&nbsp;
