This can potentially enhance\nstandard digital control systems where the sampling period is fixed. This talk aims to answer if\nthis is the case for the traditional Linear Quadratic Gaussian and l2-gain problems. In the\nperiodic sampling case, these two problems can be framed in the h2 and hinf design framework,\nrespectively, and the optimal control policies and resulting performances are well-known. This talk\ndiscusses how in the Linear Quadratic Gaussian settings, one can design event-triggered control\npolicies that strictly outperform optimal periodic designs, and even quantify such a performance\ngain. On the other hand, in the l2-gain setting, one can design event-triggered controllers that\nguarantee the same optimal l2-gain of periodic controllers, but not a strictly lower l2-gain. The\nconcepts are illustrated with numerical examples.&nbsp; \nBiographical Information\nD. J. (Duarte) Antunes was born in Viseu, Portugal. He received the Licenciatura in Electrical\nand Computer Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon, in 2005. He did his PhD\n(cum laude) from 2006 to 2011 in the research field of Automatic Control at the Institute for\nSystems and Robotics, IST, Lisbon, in close collaboration with the University of California, Santa\nBarbara. From 2011 to 2013, he held a postdoctoral position at the Eindhoven University of\nTechnology (TU/e). He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanical\nEngineering at TU/e. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on\nAutomatic Control and IEEE Control Systems Letters, and co-author of the papers that received the\nIEEE Control Systems Letters Outstanding Paper Award 2018, the best paper award at the IEEE\nInternational Conference on Event-based Control, Communication and Signal Processing 2017, and the\nbest student paper award in the 17th IFAC Symposium on Automatic Control in Aerospace 2007. His\nresearch interests include networked control systems, stochastic control, approximate dynamic\nprogramming, and robotics.\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
