Information-based control is a young and very active subfield of control theory that studies problems arising in the analysis and design of digitally networked systems. One of the fundamental problems here is to determine the minimal requirements on the communication network shared by the components of a networked system, under which a given control objective can be achieved. A satisfactory solution to this problem requires the merging of techniques from classical control theory, information theory and nonlinear dynamics. However, the most advanced results obtained so far can roughly be separated into the following three categories:
(1) such that concentrate on the nonlinear aspects of the problem, ignoring or idealizing the information-theoretic aspects,
(2) such that take into account the information-theoretic aspects, but assume linear dynamics,
(3) such that leave aside both the challenges arising from nonlinearity and complicated information structures, but take into account practically relevant aspects such as time-delays, packet dropouts and energy constraints.
In this talk, we present some of the results in the first category and discuss challenges that arise by adding assumptions that are usually made in the other two categories.
Christoph Kawan received the diploma and doctoral degree in mathematics (both under supervision of Prof. Fritz Colonius) from the University of Augsburg, Germany, in 2006 and 2009, respectively. He was a research fellow at the State University of Campinas, Brazil, in 2011. In 2014, he spent nine months as a research scholar at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences (New York University). He is the author of the book `Invariance Entropy for Deterministic Control Systems - An Introduction' (Lecture Notes in Mathematics 2089. Berlin: Springer, 2013). Since January 2015, he works in the research group of Prof. Fabian Wirth at the University of Passau, Germany. His research interests include networked control, the qualitative theory of nonautonomous dynamical systems and the topological classification of dynamical systems.
